Brothers.
"I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see. I sought my God, but my God eluded me. I sought my brother and I found all three."
I made a promise a long time ago to a very special individual in my life. I made a promise to my father that I would take care of my younger brother, that I would never separate myself or distance myself from him. That unity in both brotherhood and spirit would keep us close. And it has.
It's been years since I made this promise, one that I hold very close to my heart and that I will keep forever, or at least, until my time is over. No bond is stronger than blood. I remember very little from my childhood, but what I do remember always includes my younger brother in the picture. We've always been close, remained close until now, and I believe that bond will keep us close throughout the years to come.
I consider myself lucky to have siblings. Having a brother or sister is a gift. This is because siblings are those friends that you can really rely on and put your full trust on, knowing that they can be there for you at times that perhaps other friends will not be. A healthy brotherhood is a bond you carry throughout your life, and the values that come with it you pass down through generation to generation.
While I was growing up, being my brother's keeper was a tough job. I felt the responsibility on my shoulders, I had to make sure I set a good example for him, but back when I was young, I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Looking back now, I see that it was a heavy task, and still is.
But not only because I feel like I should set an example, not only for him, but for my other brothers and my sister. I went from having one brother to having three more and blessed with a younger sister. And I've learned a lot from all of them. Lessons here and there that I have chosen to apply to my life; lessons that have helped me grow as a person, and grow as an individual that cares for others.
As time has passed by, I've come to look up to my blood brother in particular, not only because he has become independent before me, but also because I've seen him go through this transition in his life. Growing as a person, achieving goals that he set himself up both in school and social circles. I have seen my younger brother grow into an adult that has a future and a dream. I have seen him surpass me.
I am proud.
It has made me proud to see his achievements, to have been there to witness this growth. He has surprised me, he has comforted me, he has proven me what it is to become better, to remain strong, and to become that which you dream so long to become.
There were times where I felt weak, and felt like he was more of a keeper than me. Like he helped me through, like he picked me up when I was down and reminded me to go on, to keep on walking with my head up.
You see, at times, I felt like he was the one taking care of me, and not the other way around. In a way, he has. And for that, I am thankful. It just continues to prove me that which I always knew from day one: my brother is there for me.
If you have a brother or sister, remember this: don't ever take them for granted.
They are a piece of you. They are here for you.
They are family.
And in the end, family is all that matters.
