Wednesday's Deal

Ages ago, Odin came down from the heavens, stepping away from his throne, here he sat and watched over the world below. Across his travels through the human land, Odin kept a disguise, watching every human's every move. Carefully listening, observing, and paying close attention. Humans were always intriguing creatures, he thought.

It wasn't until one day during his travels, Odin ran into a particular human--

This is when Odin met King Lugh of Ireland. He took particular interest in him, and decided to watch over him carefully as his life unfolded.
Picture
Odin always kept a close eye on King Lugh, and the more he observed the more he learned.

He always had Thought and Memory, his faithful ravens flying high, watching down upon the human world, but always tracking down King Lugh.

Until his battle of Moira, where cursed by St. Ronan, King Lugh went mad and was forced to wander for eternity.

Odin took particular interest in King Lugh, because despite his madness, he saw something profitable in him.

Something valuable.

King Lugh eventually was transformed into a bird by the Old Gods and flew away carrying only madness alongside him.

While humans lived and died and centuries passed as good old time does, tales of fairies, banshees, and otherworldly creatures such as leprechauns slipped from tongue to tongue by humans.

Some chose to believe the stories, others were scared by them, and others were fascinated and loyal to them.

One human in particular was Essie MacGowan, a maid, servant, con-artist and thief--but above all, a firm believer in the stories.

As she grew older, she kept telling the stories, and leaving out gifts for the creatures, hoping one day she would run into one.

It was during this time Odin realized the particular interest in having Essie and King Lugh meet.

He arranged the meeting, hoping Essie would help King Lugh evolve into a better version of himself--for the madness had made him forget who he once was.

And so, Essie ran into King Lugh, now a leprechaun, next to her jail cell. About to be executed, Essie made a deal with the leprechaun, offering a few gold coins in exchange for safe passage onto the Americas.

With nothing else to lose, but two gold coins to gain, the leprachaun accepted the deal and helped Essie travel to the Americas.

All Essie had to do was keep believing in him...

...and that is how the leprechaun, Mad Sweeney, came to the Americas and reinvented himself. With a little bit of help from a friend, and an unknown twist of fate by a God.

I'm tired. I am sick of it. Tired of hurting ye. Like ye don't have enuff shite to be dealin with, ey?

I sit 'ere, watching o'er these here books and booklets. Trying to find a way to fix all of this. Make it better.

Why can't I find a bastard answer, ey?

Nothin' is rite, I ain't goin' to lie to ye.

I spend too much time in me room. And it's a huge room, eye, that is true.

I am sick of it. I am tired of it all, Mad Wife, I tell ye.

This rivalry, this fight, call it what you want, this bastard thing 'ere we always go back to.

No matter which one of us wins in the end, we all lose.

And you think once ye come out here and look at what is happen'ng that ye going to like it a wee bit more than the inside.

Then you realize nothin' is the same and yet the same feels like shite.

Sometimes it is much easier to numb yerself until ye can't feel a dam thing.

It's easier than most things, ey. I can already feel it kickin' in, ey.

Makes ever'th'ng around ye fade alongside ye.

Picture
I see 'er goin', there. ey.

Now what do ye think this story will be, eh?

Another one to add to the collection, ey.

So what--what ye want me to do, ey, take a number, wait on that number to be called?

I am tired. Sick of waitin'.

Don't you see, that love isn't just black and white?

Aye, it has many colors.

So I'll take a number, aye, and await my turn patiently.

I'll always wait fer ye, Mad Wife.

Wicked Game

"Why do you hate yourself so much?" she asked him. "Why are you doing this to yourself?"

"I Am Choosing This For All Of You. You Know What Is Going To Happen If The Bloody Serpent Remains Free!"

"Stop this, Lucifer. There is always a different way to deal with these things between us."

"He Needs To Go, Maze! I Am The Only One That Can Bloody Take 'Im Down There! Do Not Get In My Way."

"That's not true, why won't you listen."

"I Have To Do This."

"Ey, no ye don't, ye don't need to play hero again, silly man. Aye have a better idea." The leprechaun joined in the conversation.

"I say we listen to him. Let's see what he has to offer," Dream offered peace.

"Well, Come On, Then, God King. Speak Your Piece. We Have No Time To Lose Here."

"Aye, yer right. Well, see, Devil Man, yer brother 'ere, Dream, aye, he can take 'im down the beaten road, the road with no exit. No shortcuts, jus a straight line down there. And with 'is powers he can shut that door and make the lock disappear, aye."

"Don't Be Mad.... That Could Not Work. The Lock Is On The Inside."

"I can do it, Lucifer." Dream stepped forward.

"This is a really stupid idea, you cannot be entertaining this!" Maze yelled furiously.

"Aye, but ye know what they say, darlin'. Better the devil you know....than the angel you don't."

Picture
Dream went along with the plan even to Lucifer's and Maze's disgust. There were votes that were cast but in the end, Dream would do as it was proposed.

He asked Death for help opening the portal, and she assisted him.

From the shadows, Jackie Estacado watched as everything unfolded. He knew better than to step into the whole mess, trying to put in his two cents. He had already watched the nonsense that The Serpent had created. He had already watched his fellow man bent so out of shape that he could no longer see if what stood before him was still an act... or the Truth.

But the dominoes had fallen one last time and this time...this time things would change for the better.

It would all be in an effort to avenge the death of The Other. The only casualty that appeared to not have a way of returning.

So Dream entered the portal, dragging The Serpent by his tail, pulled him in and Death closed the portal. Smoke and mirrors, all you could see that was left.

And through the clouds and hellfire, Dream traveled long and eventually reached The Pit. And in that pit he threw The Serpent, and with one last gesture, he split him in half. The Serpent screeched with blood and sweat and tears dripping on the ground below them.

Dream called his powers unto The Pit and started fading the lock away. The Serpent, lying there hopeless and torn hissed one last time at Dream.

And then there was quiet.

Silence that would murder a God.

That would murder a Monster.

That would always haunt The Pit from that moment on....until everything else faded.
